30th September 2003    Sheep Dog Results.

Although the open sheep dog trial season is drawing to a close, giving way to the nursery classes, last weekend there were still many open trials held throughout the north of England.  However, for Gordon Watt of Silsden, perhaps the end of the open season has come too soon, as his dogs, Buff and York, are both running very well at present.  At the Nidderdale Show trial, held at Pateley Bridge, North Yorkshire, in addition to winning the brace competition, Buff was placed second in the open singles class.

The following Saturday Gordon took two early runs at the Holme Society trial held at Cliviger, Lancashire.  Tom Huddleston of Caton, judged the entry of 46 dogs as they worked rather difficult to manage mixed ewes. Throughout the sheep required careful handling and as they were reluctant to go into the pen many competitors failed to complete their trial.  On 69 of 90 points, York took a clear four-point lead over Robert Fielden’s Vic in second place, while Buff was placed sixth.

After competing at Cliviger, Gordon travelled to Hutton Rudby, North Yorkshire, to run in the Ryedale Society’s open double gather, where George Redpath of Dacre, judged the entry of 46.  Over this very big course the running was on good to manage Mule ewes.  David Bristow was standing top with Bonny, until with the very last trial once again Gordon and York took a clear lead.  Earning 146 of 160 points, this time they took the title clear by eight marks. As some consolation to David, he won the trial held on Sunday where the running was restricted to Ryedale Society members.

Six-year-old York was bred by Anne Watt, Gordon’s wife, out of Chum and sired by his master’s King, a grandson of Wyn Edwards’ Bill, which won the Supreme Championship twice, in 1981 and 1982.  Chum is of the same line that Gordon first started trialing with twenty-four years ago.  Eight-year-old Buff was bred out of W.J. Irwin’s Kim, a half sister to Chum and sired by Peter Hetherington’s Bob.

23rd September 2003    Sheep Dog Results.

At the three-day Hayfield sheep dog trials, held in Derbyshire, Stuart Walton and Dug earned the title of Champions of the Peak.  The 24 championship contenders consisted of the top two dogs from the local trial, the top two from Friday afternoon’s open and the top six from Saturday’s open.  In addition there were 14 winners of trials held over the summer in the High Peak District and surrounding areas.  Stuart and Dug qualified by winning the Harden Moss double gather championship held in June.

On Sunday their good double gather trial secured a clear five-point victory over Colin Pickford and Ben who took second place.  Six-year-old Dug was bred by Stephen Thexton of Sedbergh out of Fly and sired by Athol Clark’s Nip a son of Allan Heaton’s Flash

9th September 2003    Sheep Dog Results.

Alison Salisbury’s Astra Sweep, of Riddlesden, Keighley, earned his first open victory at the Silverdale trial, held last Sunday, near Carnforth, Lancashire.

James Burrows, the host and last year’s winner, judged the entry of 56 dogs. A good sized course, which was gathered from either hand, was set on undulating ground that rose gently up to the lift.  Provided they were handled with authority, the Texel-cross ewes worked well both on the outfield and at hand, although they were quick to take advantage of the weaker dogs.

Running at number sixteen, Alison and Sweep set a standard that remained unbeaten.  After a faultless left-hand gather, where for much of the way he was running blind, Sweep had a clean lift, then lost a total of twelve points for deviations of line over the course.  A clean pen was followed by a decisive single, which gave the winning score of 88 of 100 points.

Sweep was bred in April 97 by Janet Beale of Forfar out of Eryri Nan and sired by R.T. Roberts’ Roy

2nd September 2003    Sheep Dog Results.

Malcolm Mason took two open titles within the week with Kate.  On Bank Holiday Monday he topped an entry of 29 dogs competing in the Rydale open held at Easby, North Yorkshire.  Tony Bell of Selby, judged the running, which was on testing Mule ewes.  With a score of 89 of 100 points, Kate took a clear nine-point lead over her full litter brother, Jane Simpson’s Sweep.

On the following Sunday Malcolm and Kate competed in the Scrivelsby open where the 47 entries were judged by David Sykes of Bardney.  Over an extensive and testing course the running was on packets of five crossbred ewes.  Once again Kate took a clear lead, this time by seven points over the runner up Neil Jones’ Wisp.

A rough coated, black and tan bitch, Kate was bred in September 1996 by her master out of Meg and sired by David Brady’s Scott.  From that litter of nine there have been four successful trial dogs; Jane Simpson’s Sweep, Mick Ward’s Bracken, Arthur Temple’s Lassie 2 and of course Kate.
