26th November 2002 Sheep Dog Results. Paul Atkinson’s Tess took her first victory last Saturday at the Holme nursery held near Todmorden. Brian Crawshaw of Healey judged the entry of 43 dogs. With a late run Tess worked her Texel shearlings nicely around the flat course to take the title by two points over Alf Kyme’s Mac. She was bred in January 2000 by John Templeton of Fenwick out of Meg, a daughter of Spot and sired by Tweed, a grandson of Roy. After buying her as a puppy Paul has reared and trained her on his sheep and suckler hill farm near Briercliffe. Thomas Longton’s Mirk also took his first title at the Windermere nursery held at New Hutton. Keith Preston of Kirkwhelpington judged the entry of 29 as they worked Mule hoggs over a hillside course. Bred by Jim Fyall of Rochester, in February 99, Mirk is out of Fly and sired by Mike Northwood’s Turk, which goes back to Thomas’ Bess. Paul Turnbull’s Lad was another to gain his first win at the Northumberland nursery held at Kirkwhelpington on Sunday. The 22 entries ran on Scottish Blackface hoggs, judged by Richard Harl of Durham. Lad was bred by myself in March 2001 out of Jen and sired by Robin Dean’s Roy. At the Yorkshire Society’s second nursery of the season, held near Silsden, in West Yorkshire, Albert Mellin of Oakworth judged an entry of 47 dogs. Over rough undulating ground the nice sized course rose gently up to the lift. Provided they were handled with care the mainly Swaledale, along with some Herdwick ewes were manageable, although they became more settled during the afternoon after the rain started. Despite this the winning run came quite early in the morning when Alec Baines ran Jess at number seven. A smooth coated, very sharp bitch, Jess responded well to all commands. She handled her sheep well, successfully negotiating all obstacles and losing odd points here and there for minor deviations. Jess almost penned clean, but while two ewes went in one slipped down the side. Finally she captured her charges, but at a loss of half of her penning points. Her score of 78 was not matched until with the very last run of the day Richard Briggs and Star equalled it. However, with an outrun, lift and fetch decision the title went to Jess, resulting in her third nursery win. I bred Jess in February 2000 out of Jen, a bitch bred by Iain Ibbotson of Oakworth out of Hilston Sue and by David Broster’s Nap. Jess’ sire is Robin Dean’s Roy, a son of Paul Turnbull’s Nap. Alec bought her as a pup and has reared her. Last February he also bought her full litter sister Meg, which has twice been the runner up, but has yet to take her first victory.
