27th May 2003    Sheep Dog Results.

At the mid-week Hebden Bridge trial, nineteen-year-old Tom Lawrenson took his first open win with Clifton Moll.  Over a steep hillside course the running was on good to manage Mule and Texel hoggs. Sydney Bentham of Oakworth, judged the entry of 58.  Running at number 13 little fault could be found in Moll’s trial, apart from slight line deviations over the cross-drive.  Her score of 97 gave her a single point advantage over Jim Cropper’s Alf who took second place.

At the Trawden open held on Twiston Moor, in the shadow of Pendle Hill, the Swaledale hoggs were difficult to keep on line due to the rough terrain.  Reluctant to pass through thick clumps of reeds and boggy patches, often competitors were more successful letting them pick their own way rather than force them.  Of the 63 entries it was Derek Scrimgeour’s Ben that took the title.  “He was one of the few dogs to keep in contact with his sheep all the way around the course,” commented the judge, Danny Wild of Rakewood.

For the second consecutive year Gordon Watt won the Fulwood Booth Double Gather Championship; last year with York and this year with Buff.  Of the 16 championship contenders running over an extensive hillside course, Buff took a clear of eight marks over the runners up, Alastair Gilchrist and Mac.

20th May 2003    Sheep Dog Results.

At the two popular trials held in North Lancashire last Saturday, there were one hundred and eighty runs.  At Quernmore Bill Heslop of Baxenden, judged an entry of 91 dogs, working flighty Swaledale hoggs over a course that sloped downhill to the lift.  Running in heavy rain at number 56 it was Alan Leak and Bill who took the title.  Losing just five marks for deviations over the outfield, Bill finished clean at the pen.  His score of 85 gave him a single point advantage over David Carlton’s Hemp, who was the runner up in the open and winner of the novice class on 84.  Rising eight-years-old, Bill was bred by Neil Jones of Thwing out of Dot and sired by Ian Murdoch’s Ted.

At the Abbeystead trial Bob Clarkson judged an entry of 89.  Once again the running was on very touchy Swaledale hoggs over a course that sloped gently downhill.  With the first run of the day Arthur Temple set a standard that was not beaten with Lassie.  After losing a total of six marks from her fieldwork, a slip at the pen cost a further three points.  However her score of 81 remained at the top just one point ahead of the runner up David Carlton, this time with Briar.  A Welsh bred dog, nine-year-old Lassie was bred by E. Jones out of Queen and sired by Aled Owen’s Roy.

14th May 2003    Sheep Dog Results.

Derek Scrimgeour and Ben took the Yorkshire Open Championship title on Sunday.  Over rough pasture at Newbridge Farm, Sutton in Craven, the good sized course sloped very gently down to the lift.  Running was on flighty Swaledale hoggs that proved a challenge both over the outfield and at the pen.

On Saturday Sandy Beaton of Nun Appleton, judged an entry of 73 dogs.  With run number two Timothy Longton and Jake earned 78 points, the highest score of the day.  One mark behind were the runners up Danny Thompson and Lassie who ran at number 56.

On Sunday Ronnie Scargill of Dewsbury, judged the slightly smaller entry of 62.  Both of the two top runs came one after the other.  Derek Scrimgeour went ahead with Ben on 82 points at number 35, only to be pushed down into second place by the next run, Alf Kyme and Bill who scored 83.

From both days the two highest pointed competitors went forward into the championship held early Sunday evening.  Drawn to run first, it was Derek and Ben who set a standard that was not beaten.  Danny and Lassie ran out of time at the pen, where Timothy and Jake were disqualified.   With the last run Alf and Bill had a similar round to the first one, but fell just one point short of matching that score.  Therefore, a reversal of fortunes, it was Derek and Ben who took the coveted championship title, while Alf and Bill were the runners up.

Eight-year-old Ben was bred by Michael Corry out of Bess and sired by David Cahill’s Tass.  A rough coated, tri-coloured dog, after winning in the year 2000, this is the second time he has taken this prestigious championship title.

6th May 2003    Sheep Dog Results.

Peter Ellis and Jack topped an entry of 93 dogs at the Trawden Spring Open Trial, held last Saturday at Twiston, near Clitheroe.  Pat Noble of Quernmore, judged the running which was on flighty Swaledale gimmer hoggs over a sizeable rising course.  Taking run number 66, after a clean start Jack lost a total of five points for line deviations over the field.  Only a minority of competitors penned and after having some trouble with one of the hoggs, Jack put his sheep in with a loss of three marks.  On 82 he took the title by a single point over John Palmer and Shep.  Eight-year-old Jack is homebred out of Deerplay Mist and by his master’s Cap.  A very successful open dog, this was his first win of the season.

On Sunday Jim Cropper and Sid won the open trial held by the Yorkshire Society to raise money for the English National.  Sydney and Gladys Bentham of Oakworth, judged the entry of 86.  After losing two points from the difficult lengthy gather and four from the fetch, the remainder of Sid’s trial was clean.  This was his sixth victory in as many weeks.
