ARCHIVED TRIAL RESULTS

MARCH 2004

26th  March 2004 Sheep Dog Results.

Roger Handy took both first and second placings in the nursery class, while Thomas Longton won the novice title, at the Ernest Brewer Memorial Trial held last Saturday at Trawden, Lancashire.  Albert Mellin of Oakworth, judged then entry of 45 dogs.

Although the weather was extremely windy on the elevated trial field the Mule hoggs were reasonable to handle and most dogs responded to their commands.  At number 34 Roger took the lead in the nursery class with smooth coated Bet on 79 points.  However, at 38 his score of 80 points with homebred Jock went ahead.   Both dogs have worked very consistently over the winter and their awards on Saturday made a good conclusion to a highly successful season.  Although the nursery class was won with afternoon trials the novice title was taken with run number eight.  Thomas and tri-coloured Jim had a steady round, which gained the winning score of 76.

8th March 2004    Sheep Dog Results.

At Lindley Moor, near Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, the Meltham Sheep Dog Society held it’s final nursery trial of the season.  Over a large course that rose quite steeply up to the lift, the running was on Texel and Suffolk cross hoggs.  Although they could be a little heavy to work, on the whole they were good to manage.  Colin Dewhirst of Bank Newton, judged the trial entry of 38 dogs, then the concluding championship of seven contenders.

The winning trial run came at number 29 when Jim Cropper and Glen earned 81 points, putting Carol Mellin and Maisie, who had been standing top, down into second place.  Rising three-years-old, Glen is homebred out of his master’s Floss and sired by Shirley Cropper’s Beechwood Bob.  This was his fifth nursery title this season and he also took the Trawden championship two weeks earlier.

In the championship it was a close fought contest between the two top dogs, however, John Wood and Jen took the title while Jim and Glen were the runners up.  A smooth coated, tri-coloured bitch, Jen was bred in April 2002 by Les Jones of Wrelton out of Peg.  Her sire is her master’s Scott, a son of Stuart MacFarlane’s Vic.  In her first season this was her second championship title and she also won at a Meltham trial held in January.

2nd March 2004    Sheep Dog Results.

At the final Windermere nursery held on Saturday at Thorpinsty, Cartmel Fell, Doug Reynolds of Barbon, judged the trial entry of 24 dogs, then the concluding championship of seven contenders.  Running at number 12, Timothy Longton and Elian Fizz won the trial on 78 points.  A two-and-a-half-year-old, medium coated tri-coloured bitch, in her first season this was her first win. She was bred by M.L. Hughes of Rhyl, out of Elian Nan and sired by David Whitehead’s Tweed.

Drawn to run first in the championship Stuart Walton and Brackenholme Frank set a standard that was not beaten.  Although his packet of five Swaledale hoggs were constantly pulling towards the top right-hand corner of the flat field, from where they were both released and taken off, Frank handled them well.  His score of 82 of 100 marks stood four clear of the runners up, Stephen Thexton and Nap, who were the winners of the aggregate trophy.   Frank was homebred in April 2002 out of his master’s Fly and sired by his Dug, while Nap was bred by Athol Clark of Middleton, in May 2001 out of Lucky and by Nip.
