At the popular Lowgill trials, held last Saturday in the Tatham Fells, North Lancashire, William Huddleston of Arkholme, judged an entry of 82 dogs. Over the flat course the running was on lively Swaledale and Dalesbred hoggs. If handled carefully they were manageable over the course but many packets proved difficult to pen. With run number 50 it was Peter Ellis with Jack who took the open title. They lost just three points from their fetch and two from their driving resulting in a clear lead on 85. Eight-year-old Jack is homebred out of Deerplay Mist and by Cap. With a later run at number 75 Joseph Relph took the novice title with Liz. Apart from slipping her hoggs at the first fetch gates, Liz had a good round. A smart, smooth coated bitch, she was bred in March 1999 by Bob Clarkson of Embsay out of Gail and sired by Robin Dean’s Roy. RESULTS. LOWGILL, Tatham Fells, Open (83 ran): 1, P. The Deerplay Hill Trial celebrated it’s thirtieth anniversary last weekend. Jim Cropper, the host and the winner last year with Sid, judged the 85 trial entries on Saturday and the twenty championship contenders on Sunday. With run number 47 Joe McRobert and Moel Spot won Saturday’s trial, five points clear of the runners up, John Palmer with Jill. Spot was one of the few dogs to gather left-handed yet despite taking probably the hardest route he had a good gather losing just two marks. The remainder of his points were dropped from his outfield work and finishing with a clean pen he scored 85 of 100. This was the second time Joe has won the Deerplay trial, the first was in 1992 with Glen. That was the first year the trial became a two-day event and Joe and Glen went on to win the double gather championship. On Sunday the winning run came at number 18, Glyn Jones and Moel Taff. Taff’s first gather was good, although he had difficulty holding the wilful Cheviots on line over the first fetch. After turning back well, Glyn guided him up the fell for his second packet of sheep. Following good course work, Taff shed and penned clean, but taking his single at the second attempt he lost six marks from that final task. However, his score of 160 of 200 gave him a two-point advantage over Stuart Walton and Dug in second place. Both Taff and Spot are of the same breeding, out of Ceri Rundle’s Dolwen Fan and sired by her Bwlch Taff. Whereas Taff is rising four-years-old, Spot, from an earlier litter, is six.
