29th July 2003 Sheep Dog Results. Chris Todd took the Lorton open title last Saturday with Rob and was placed third with Gemma, a daughter of the rough-coated tri-coloured dog. Due to the continuing movement restrictions instead of the usual venue, the trial went to the sheep, which were grazing a valley bottom field at Wythop. Recently gathered from the fell and newly clipped, the Swaledale shearlings were quite good to manage around the field, but very hard to pen. Adam Fox of Penton, judged the entry of 61 dogs. With run number 10 Chris took the lead with Gemma on 79 points. However, running Rob at number 18 he gained a further two marks, which remained the top score of the day. Now eight-years-old, Chris bought Rob as a two-year-old, liking him as soon as he saw him. He was bred by J. Maughan of Saughtreegate out of Meg and sired by R. Metcalfe’s Tip. Sired by Rob, six-year-old Gemma is out of her master’s Gyp. Another daughter of Rob was placed sixth, David Goulding’s Queen. Rob and Gemma stood first and second for most of the day until Eddie Wills and Roy split them gaining 80 points with run number 59. In addition to being the runners up, they also won the local class. At the Fylde open trial held at Brindle, near Chorley, Alan Leak of Gaisgill, Cumbria, and his homebred bitch Bess, took their third win of the season. A sizeable course was set over a large pasture that sloped downhill to the lift. Recently spained, the Texel-cross and Mule ewes ran consistently well enabling a high standard of competitive work. Timothy Longton of Quernmore, judged the entry of 54 dogs. When Alan and Bess went to the post at number 43 they had a score of 92 of 100 points to beat. For going marginally wide on her gather, the rough-coated bitch lost an odd mark, but she lifted her sheep clean. Keeping them moving at a steady pace she brought her ewes up the fetch of over 300 metres losing just a single point for the slightest deviation from line. After a good drive away and tight turn into the cross-drive four marks were dropped for deviations approaching the last obstacle. Before going into the pen her ewes hesitated slightly costing one mark, but she finished well with the best shed of the day. By a single point her score of 93 was sufficient to take the title. Alan bred Bess in November 96 out of Nell, which is from a line he has owned for many generations. Her sire is her master’s Tad, a son of Ian Murdoch’s Ted. Bess was the only pup in the litter and was very forward and quick to learn. She was competing at twelve-months-old in the nursery trials and has since continued to do well in the opens. After two days of trialing at Ringinglow, it was Gordon Birchenall and Hemp who earned the double gather championship title. Maurice Cottrill of Hope Valley judged both days seeing a total of 83 dogs compete in the qualifying trial, which was won by Richard Saxon and Flash. In the championship of 12 contenders the top three runs were very close, however by a single point Gordon and Hemp took their first championship title. At the first one held on Thursday, the 46 entries were judged by Richard Clapham of Gainsborough. Running was on good to manage Suffolk-cross ewes on a course set over a valley. It was the host, Neil Jones and Bob who took the title with an outstanding run at number 34. Between a clean start and finish, just five points were deducted for minor line deviations resulting in a score of 95 of 100. Keith Conner of Cranswick, bred the tri-coloured dog in September 95 out of Meg and by Sam. Bob’s successful trialing career was brought to a sudden halt when he snapped his hock ligament in a hind leg. With specialist treatment he slowly recovered and this was his first open title since the injury. David Braimbridge of Pickering, judged the second trial run on the same course on Saturday. Two equal scores topped the entry of 55. Neil, this time with Floss, gained 97 points running at number 29. With the very last run of the day David Bristow matched that score with Bonny. As the two trials both lost three points over the same sections, the decision went on time and as Bonny had a more flowing trial the title went to her. She was bred in March 95 by Robert Ogilvie of Thropton out of Lyn and by Jack. RESULTS. THWING CHURCH, Thursday Open (46 ran): 1, N. Jones (Thwing) Bob, 95 of 100; 2, D. Richard Saxon and Flash were the clear victors of the double gather championship that concluded two days of competition at Retford. John Harvey of Leek judged Saturday’s entry of 53 dogs. Running was over an extensive course that dipped in the middle. The Suffolk shearlings were rather touchy and difficult to pen. Running early at number seven, Dennis Hudson won the trial with Nap on an out-bye decision over Edward Hawkins who matched their score with Zac. Aged sixteen, Edward took the young handlers award. On Sunday Lawrence Taylor of Upper Cumberworth, judged the trial, then the concluding championship. Top of the 44 entries was Ian Murdoch and Scott, with Richard Saxon and Flash taking second place. There were six championship contenders, three from Saturday, two from Sunday and the highest pointed local. Drawn first, Richard and Flash set a good standard that remained top, clear by 16 marks over Ian Murdoch and Scott, who this time were the runners up. Homebred in November 98, Flash is out of her master’s Tess and sired by Alastair Gilchrist’s Taff. On Sunday at Broughton Hall, John Atkinson and Jay topped an entry of 55 dogs judged by Bill Heslop of Baxenden. Working fit, flighty Mule hoggs, with run number 17 they took a three-point lead over Shirley Cropper and Bob in second place. This was their first win together since John bought Jay in the late spring from Peter Hallam. Bred in November 98 by David Young of Cumnock, Jay was sired by Bobby Dalziel’s Jim.
