16th July 2002 Sheep Dog Results. David Wood took his first open win on Sunday working Swaledale shearlings with Moss at the Broomhead Show trial. By one point he topped an entry of 42, judged by Ian Murdoch of Sherriff Hutton. Now aged 26, as a teenager he represented England in 93 in the “One Man and his Dog” competition and in 1994 at the International Sheep Dog Trials. Rising six-years-old, Moss was bred by Anne Foxon out of Dusty and sired by Les Perrins’ Bob. At the Northumberland League open trial held at Flotterton, Raymond MacPherson judged and entry of 65 dogs. Over a rising national sized course the Mule shearlings were reasonable to handle, but quick to detect any weakness in the dogs. With run number 30, Neil Jones gained the highest points of the day with Floss. A mottled, tri-coloured bitch, seven-year-old Floss was bred by her master out of Meg and sired by Peter Turnbull’s Chip. RESULTS: NORTHUMBERLAND LEAGUE, Flotterton, Open: 1, N. 9th July 2002 Sheep Dog Results. David Bristow earned a
double victory at Thwing, winning the mid-week open trial with Jess,
then the weekend one with Bonny. Jane Simpson of Hutton Rudby, judged an entry of 50 dogs on Thursday and it was with run number 36 that David and Jess went to the top. After losing just an odd point from both her outrun and lift, Jess dropped only three marks from the remainder of her outfield work for minor line deviations. She finished with a clean pen to earn 85 of 90 marks and take a clear lead over Neil Jones’ Bob. On Saturday Mick Kinnes of
Nafferton, judged an entry of 65. After
Jane Simpson and Floss took the lead with the penultimate trial, David
and Bonny matched their score with the final run of the day.
Just one more point lost over her outrun, lift and fetch cost
Jane the title, which resulted in David taking a second victory. RESULTS: THWING Church Open, Thursday: 1, D. Bristow (Murton) Jess, 85 of 90; 2, N. Jones (Thwing) Bob, 79; 3, S. Sheep Dog Results. Raymond MacPherson and Bill took the title on Saturday at the Burton Show open trial, held at Arkholme, Lancashire, a different venue to normal this year. John Palmer of Twiston judged the 64 entries, allowing 12 minutes of time per trial as the course was large and testing. After a downhill gather the dogs had to bring the sheep up a 500 metre fetch, take them through the lengthy driving, pen and then shed. Running third from last Raymond handled his smooth coated dog skilfully, while Bill took a positive and firm hold of his sheep. They completed their trial with just seconds of time left to take the title by two points from Richard Briggs and Wenndale Ben, who had been standing top with run number 32. Nine-year-old Bill was bred by I. Edwards out of Sian and sired by G. Watkins’ Ben. Ron Hodgkinson and Liz took the Retford double gather championship on Sunday held on the Osberton Estate, near Worksop. Of the seven championship contenders, judged by Malcolm Sowerby of Bamford, Ron and Liz were drawn to run fourth. After requiring some re-direction over her first outrun, Liz had no difficulty going back the opposite hand for her second packet of sheep, which stood 800 metres from her handler. She worked the twenty Suffolk-cross shearlings in a positive manner around the course, shed five off, and then penned the five. Her score of 124 of 160 marks put her seven points clear of the runners up, Hilton Roberts and Jim. Five-and-a-half-years-old, Liz was bred by Ron out of Grigg and sired by John Templeton’s Spot.
