Sheep Dog Results.     26th June 2004

Following a very successful nursery season Roger Handy’s Jock took his first open title at the Burton Show and Lune Valley Trial held last Saturday at Arkholme, Lancashire.
Starting at 8am the running continued until 9.30pm, giving Athol Clark of Middleton a lengthy day of judging. He allowed each of the 74 entries 11 minutes of time to compete the extensive course. Most took the downhill gather of over 700 metres right-handed. To that side the handler could mostly see the dogs, whereas to the left they were out of sight for much of the way. Dorset ewes and shearlings, the sheep remained consistent and were quite good to manage, although they required careful handling at the pen.

At number three Jim Cropper earned a high score of 94 of 100 points with Sid. Athol did not expect that run to be beaten, but eventually it was. At number 44 Alan Leak and Bess matched the score, but as the two runs lost the same number of points over the same sections Bess’ quicker time put her ahead. However, at number 64 Roger and Jock went ahead, clear by three marks.
Jock had a good right-hand gather, passing confidently through the coarse grass and rushes that lie in his path towards the far end of his outrun. Using his own initiative he lifted his sheep well, then with a good pace and balance brought them up the lengthy fetch and through the two sets of obstacles. After turning his sheep around his master, who stood at the pen, Jock had exceptional driving. For the very slightest deviations he dropped a single mark from his fetch and two throughout his drive. “It was a run you dream about,” said Athol, “I could only knock three points off and even then I thought I was being a bit hard.” A clean pen completed an outstanding run that took the title on 97 points.

A smooth coated, black and white dog, Jock took six nursery wins, was the runner up on many occasions and had numerous placings this last winter. He also won three aggregate trophies; at Bamford, Ringinglow and Dovedale. Since he started to compete in the opens he has been placed several times, but has just fallen short of winning. On Saturday however, he took a clear lead to earn his first open title. Two-years-old last April, Jock was homebred out of his master's Cass and sired by his Roy, a son of Bobby Dalziel’s Jim. In addition to it being an enjoyable day of trialing £691 was raised for St Johns Hospice and the organisers would like to thank the competitors for their generosity.

On Saturday the Ryedale Society held an open trial at Sheriff Hutton, North Yorkshire. Danny Thompson of Moorsholm, judged the entry of 46 dogs. Running was over a good sized course that was mainly flat, but dropped slightly away towards the lift. The recently clipped Continental cross shearlings were run in packets of five and there were sufficient for none to be run a second time over. They were never easy to handle and tended to be shy of the obstacles.

Philip Exelby and Meg took an early lead when they gained 72 points with run number three. However, with run number 40, David Bristow and Bonny had an outstanding trial that went well ahead. Although Ian Murdoch and Floss earned 74 running at 46 to take second place, Bonny took the title clear by 14 points.

Going left-handed, with the majority, Bonny gathered well. She carefully lifted her shearlings then kept in good contact as they came down the first half of the fetch. Although they were twitching from side to side she put them nicely through the fetch gates. Over the first drive the sheep increased their speed, yet once again Bonny put them through the obstacle, then had quite a good turn into the cross-drive where again she caught the final gates well. Although they were reluctant to be penned she never allowed her sheep to break and put them in. She had a good finish shedding off the last two shearlings with no hesitation. Bonny was the only dog to hit all three gates, pen and shed and this was reflected in her score of 88 points.

Bred by Robert Ogilvie of Thropton, Bonny was sired by Jack and out of Lyn, a daughter of Mark Hallam’s Highgate Ben. She has always been highly successful on the trial fields taking 50 awards in the 97/98 nursery season of which 23 were wins. Her achievements have continued and she now has 24 open and championship victories. Although she is now nine-years-old, David says, “She is as fit as ever.”

On Sunday Jim Cropper took the top two placings with father and son at the Broughton Hall open trial held near Skipton, North Yorkshire. Barry Liddle of Felliscliffe judged the entry of 63 dogs. Over a field that rises gently up to the lift the running was on Mule shearlings that were consistently good to manage.
At number 24 Jim took the lead with Dan on 95 of 100 points. Between a clean start and finish he lost an odd mark from his lift and four for deviations of line over the course. Although this was a high score his sire, Sid, went ahead at number 30. Sid dropped nothing until he turned his shearlings into the drive where an odd mark was deducted when they paused. After a clean pen he lost a couple of marks from his shed for slight hesitation resulting in a score of 97. A tall smooth coated dog, five-year-old Sid was bred by Nigel Watkins of South Wales out of Jet and sired by Ceri Rundle’s Bwlch Hemp. He is another dog that after gaining many nursery awards has continued to have huge success in the opens.
