28th January 2003 Sheep Dog Results. Timothy Longton enjoyed a double success on Saturday winning both the Windermere and Holme nurseries with Jake. Held at Winster, the Windermere trial of 26 entries was judged by Fred Ingham of Arnside. With an early run Timothy and Jake secured a high score of 85 points, which was not beaten. At Holme, William Heslop of Baxenden judged 49 dogs as they worked Cheviots over the lower slopes of Deerplay Hill. Running at number 39, Jake gave an equally polished performance and once again gained 85 points, the winning score. Two-years-old next month, Jake was bred by Timothy’s late father, Tim Longton out of Gael, a daughter of Clifton Rob. His sire is his master’s Rob, a son of his Cap. RESULTS. Jim Dickinson of Belford judged the entry of 14 dogs, which was slightly lower than usual. Running was on Scottish Blackface gimmer hoggs which required working with firm authority over the wet flat course. Willie Armstrong, a shepherd and stockman, won the trial with Scott. In their first season of trialing this was their very first win, which Willie felt was encouraging, and they also took the novice title. Scott is an unregistered dog bred by his master in March 2000 out of Queen and by Tyne. From each of the nine nursery trials points have been awarded to the six highest placed competitors; six for a win, down to one point for sixth placing. With 32 points the winners of the nursery league were Bevis Jordan and Buffy. Bevis was also placed third with Joe, a full brother to Buffy. The two dogs were bred by their master out of Shona, which is of a line he has had for many years. Their sire is Paul Turnbull’s Don, a son of his 1993 English National Champion, Nap. On 23 points, Jim Fyall, the league secretary, took second place with Tibbie. RESULTS. NORTHMBERLAND LEAGUE, West Ditchburn, Nursery: 1, W. Armstrong (Bamburgh) Scott, 84 of 100; 2, M. Sandy Beaton of Nun Appleton judged an entry of 25 dogs. Running was over a long narrow field on predominantly Texel-cross fattening hoggs. Although all competitors had fresh sheep those worked in the afternoon behaved better than those run in the morning. With the third from last trial James Dewhurst took the lead with Maddie on 73. However, with the following run Tom and Moll went ahead by a single point. Between a good start and finish Moll lost points over her driving where her sheep slipped at the last obstacle. A two-and-a-half-year-old bitch, Moll was bred by Nancy Harrison of Clifton out of Tudor Belle. Her sire is Edward Harrison’s Bill. After winning in October at Reapsmoor and in November at Holme, this was Moll’s third victory. RESULTS: TRAWDEN, Silsden, Nursery: 1, T. Greer Todd, 71. 8th January 2003 Alec Baines enjoyed an excellent start to 2003, for after winning the nursery class at the New Years Day Charity trial with Jess, the following Saturday he won the Holme nursery with Tanhill Bill. On New Years Day fog made visibility poor on the elevated trial course at Oakworth, West Yorkshire. Probably due to the bad weather entries were slightly down on previous years. Nevertheless, Dennis Lumley of Pateley Bridge judged an entry of 36 dogs as they worked flighty Swaledale ewes over a rising course. All four top dogs in the nursery class were on the same points, but losing the least over their outrun, lift and fetch gave Alec and Jess the title, their fourth win of the season. Bred in February 2000, Jess is out of my bitch Jen and sired by Robin Dean’s Roy. On the highest points of the day, Gus Dermody and his Welsh bred bitch Tia won the novice class. On Saturday Albert Mellin of Oakworth, judged the Holme Society nursery, held at Colden, near Hebden Bridge. Thirty-two dogs worked mixed gimmer hoggs over a sizeable snow covered hillside course. A good and steady trial gave Alec and Tanhill Bill a clear lead and their third victory. Bill was bred in June 99 by his master out of Emma and sired by Carol Mellin’s Zeb.
