ARCHIVED TRIAL RESULTS

FEBRUARY 2004

23rd February 2004    Sheep Dog Results.

Competition was close in both the trial and the championship last Saturday at Trawden with just one point separating the winners.  Gordon Watt of Bradfield judged the trial entry of 51 dogs then the concluding championship of seven contenders.  Over a rising course the running was on Swaledale hoggs which were reasonable to handle.

With an early run in the trial Tom Lawrenson and Spot gained the winning score of 82 points.  Although Timothy Longton and Carrie made a strong challenge in the afternoon, they fell one point short of matching that score to take second place.  For homebred Spot, which has just turned two years old, this was his second nursery title.

In the championship, drawn to run first, Jim Cropper and Glen set a high standard gaining 90 of 100 marks.  None of the remaining contenders were able to match that score, although John Wood and Peg came close on 89.  Therefore, in addition to four nursery wins Glen now has a championship title to his credit.

17th February 2004    Sheep Dog Results.

After taking two wins the previous week, on Saturday, Timothy Longton and Carrie once again enjoyed a double victory.

At Bolton Abbey, near Skipton, North Yorkshire, the Yorkshire Society held it’s final nursery trial of the season followed by the concluding championship.   Over a sizeable undulating course the running was on flighty Mule gimmer hoggs.   John Atkinson of South Milford, judged the trial entry of 43 dogs, then the seven championship contenders.

With a morning run, at number 14, Timothy and Carrie took a clear lead in the trial on 81 points, five clear of the runners up, Michael Longton and Monty.  This was their third win and with it they earned a place in the championship.

All the championship runs had flaws.  Drawn first John Bell and Jess had a poor fetch, but then went on to have a good round which earned 77 points.  Next to the post was Alf Kyme with Ben.  After outstanding outfield work their sheep refused to be penned, resulting in a score of 75.  Timothy and Carrie ran at number four.  Overall their trial was good but a slip at the cross-drive obstacle and taking the shed at the second attempt cost points.  Nevertheless their score of 78 took the title by a single mark.

Carrie was bred by the late Stephen Hepworth out of his bitch Carrie and sired by her master’s Rob.  Timothy bought her aged nine-months from Cath Findlay of Hallington who had reared her from a pup.

10th February 2004    Sheep Dog Results.

A new venue at Barnacre, near Garstang, Lancashire, provided a good course for the last Fylde nursery of the season, which was concluded with the championship.  Keith Preston of Kirkwhelpington, judged the trial entry of 57 dogs, then the championship of seven contenders.

With a morning run Jim Cropper and Shep were standing top in the trial on 82 until in the afternoon Timothy Longton and Carrie went ahead by a single point.  Between a clean start and finish Carrie dropped a total of seven marks for deviations of line over the course.  She was bred in November 2001 by the late Stephen Hepworth, out of his bitch Carrie and sired by her master’s Rob.  Cath Findlay of Hallington reared her from a pup, then sold her to Timothy at nine-months-old.  In addition to winning at Fylde, she was also the victory at Windermere, where she had competed earlier that day.

Tom Lawrenson and Floss took the championship title running at number six.  They had an excellent trial, clean to start, then losing just seven marks for line deviations.  Floss was the only contender to pen clean and she finished with a faultless shed.  Homebred in February 2002 out of her master’s Tillymauld Nell, Floss was sired by Derek Scrimgeour’s Ben.
