ARCHIVED TRIAL RESULTS

FEBRUARY 2003

25th February 2003    Sheep Dog Results.

On Saturday the Yorkshire Society held it’s seventh and last nursery of the season, which was concluded by it’s championship.  A new venue at Bolton Abbey provided a sizeable and testing course.  The Mule hoggs were quite good to manage over the outfield if handled carefully, but often proved awkward at the pen.  Mary and Allan Heaton of Brandsby, judged the trial entry of 41, then the six championship contenders.

Jim Cropper set a good standard early in the trial gaining 81 points with Alf.  However, this score was matched by Tom Lawrenson and Clifton Moll, who on an outrun, lift and fetch decision took the title.  Nineteen-year-old Tom has enjoyed considerable success over the season with Moll, this being their fourth nursery win.  A smooth coated bitch, Moll was bred in June 2000 by Nancy Harrison of Clifton out of Tudor Belle and sired by Edward Harrison’s Bill.

In the championship it was the last trial that took the title, Jim Cropper with Dan.  A big smooth coated dog, Dan handled his sheep well, keeping them quiet and settled throughout.  Odd points were lost for deviations over the course and with a single point dropped at both the pen and shed his score of 89 gave him a clear lead.  Dan was bred in November 2001 by Shaun Richards of Burnley out of Gail, a bitch bred out of John Palmer’s Joy and sired by Kim Gibson’s Joe.  His sire is his master’s Sid, a son of Ceri Rundle’s Bwlch Hemp.  Over the winter he has earned six nursery titles and after being the victor at Fylde, two weeks earlier, has now taken two championships.

18th February 2003

Alec Baines and Jess gained their first championship title at the Northern trial held last Saturday at Great Musgrave, near Brough.  Joe MacRobert of Tweedsmuir, judged the trial entry of 37 dogs, then the concluding championship in which there were eight contenders.  Bill Skidmore won the trial with Meg, her first Northern title.  A two-and-a-half-year-old bitch, she was bred by J. Ogston of Sutherland out of Jess and sired by K. Brehmer’s Glen.

In the championship Alec and Jess were drawn to run first.  Working her four Mule hoggs from a distance over the sizeable flat course, Jess had very good outfield work.  However, she had difficulty at the pen, where the strong hoggs were intent on making towards the exhaust.  After several breaks she captured her sheep, and then had a decisive shed to finish on 84 points.  Frank Satterthwaite with Bod, the only other competitor to finish, also earned 84, but with an outrun, lift and fetch decision, Alec and Jess took the title.

Three-years-old this month, I bred Jess out of Jen, a granddaughter of Mark Hallam’s Highgate Ben and great granddaughter of Allan Heaton’s Flash.  Her sire is Robin Dean’s Roy, a son of Paul Turnbull’s Nap and grandson of Thomas Longton’s Tweed.

In addition to the five nursery titles she has taken over the season, she now has her first championship.

At the Holme trial, held at Deerplay, Fred Ingham of Arnside, judged the trial entry of 53, then the championship of four contenders.  Jim Cropper and Dan won the trial, but in the championship they were the runners up by a single point to Timothy Longton and Jake.  Two-year-old Jake was bred by Tim Longton out of Gael and sired by his master’s Rob.  He also has five nursery wins to his credit and this was his first championship title.

11th February 2003    Sheep Dog Results.

The Fylde Championship was closely contested, but by a single point it was Jim Cropper and Dan who took the title.

Raymond MacPherson of Kirklinton, judged the trial entry of 58, then the seven championship contenders.  The trial winners were Alastair Gilchrist and Pat who had an excellent run at number 47 to take the tile on 85 points.  Aelwyn Owen of Corwen bred Pat in April 2001 out of Lil and her sire is her master’s Taff.

In the championship Jim and Dan were drawn to run first.  Doing little wrong they set a high standard gaining 93 of 100 points, a score none of the following contenders could match. Next to the post were Thomas Longton and Mirk.  They too had an excellent round, but fell one point short of matching that leading score to take second place.

Dan was bred by Shaun Richards of Burnley out of Gael in November 2001.  His sire is his master’s Sid, a son of Ceri Rundle’s Bwlch Hemp.  With five nursery titles to his credit, on Saturday Dan won his first championship.

4th February 2003    Sheep Dog Results.

David Bristow and Wisp took their seventh Ryedale victory on Saturday, working Swaledale wether hoggs at Haygate Lane, Pickering.  Mick Ward of Yedingham judged the entry of 24 dogs as they worked the touchy hoggs over the flat course.  Although John Atkinson and Bonnie set the standard with run number 11, David and Wisp took the lead by one point running at number 21.  Although Wisp lost points over his outrun and lift, once he had picked up his sheep he had a good round, finishing with a clean pen.

Wisp was bred in April 2001 by his owner, Neil Jones of Thwing, out of Gyp, a bitch bred by John Hadwin out of Fay and by Mirk.  His sire is Neil’s Bob, bred by Keith Conner out of Meg and by Sam.  In addition to his seven Ryedale titles, Wisp won at Fulwood Booth, where he went on to take the championship and has won at Meltham.
