11th December 2002    Sheep Dog Results.

Roger Handy of Stainforth, near Settle took a double victory on Saturday, when he won both the nursery and novice classes at the third and final Bamford trial of the season.  After winning both championships at Dovedale, this was his second consecutive double victory.
Running, over a good sized flat course, was on hill ewes that were reasonable to manage if handled carefully, but quick to take advantage.  Maurice Cottrill of Hope Valley, judged the entry of 42 dogs.

Roger ran Jill in the nursery class at number 21.  After good outfield work, some points went at the pen, but on 79 she took the title clear by two.  His winning novice run came at number 17 with Zac.  Being off-line over the first half of the fetch was Zac’s worst fault in an otherwise good and steady trial, which gained 78 points to win by a single mark.

Jill and Zac are litter brother and sister, bred in April 2000 by Mrs Pauline Thomas of Longnor, Shrewsbury out of Jan, a daughter of Johnny Wilson’s Spot.  Their sire is Hamer Jones’ Moss, a grandson of Jim Cropper’s Cap.  Roger bought both dogs from Hamer who trained them and who has given him much guidance and advice.
John Harvey’s Mist won the nursery aggregate. A tri-coloured bitch, Mist was bred by Mark Norman of Todmorden, out of Meg and sired by Clifton Lad.  Winners of the novice aggregate were Gus Dermody and Wyn, a dog bred by Alwyn Owen out of Lil and sired by Aled Owen’s Bob.

3rd December 2002    Sheep Dog Results.

In his first season of competing, Roger Handy of Stainforth, near Settle, won both the nursery and novice championships at Dovedale last Sunday.

Bob Hambleton of Alstonefield, judged the trial of 22 entries, then the concluding championships.  Gathering downhill the running was on Mule ewes which became increasingly more difficult as the day went on, although they were never good to pen.  John Harvey was both the winner and the runner up in the nursery class with Nell and her dam Mist.  As both these dogs had already qualified Roger and Jim in third place went forward to make up the third contender.  A tri-coloured, smooth coated dog, Jim took a clear lead to gain his first championship title. He was bred in August 99 by John Seaton of Darvel, Ayrshire, out of Poppy and sired by Bobby Dalziel’s Jim.

Jock Holt won the novice trial with Cap, yet once again it was Roger who took the championship title, this time with Zac.  The winner of the second Dovedale trial, Zac was the only one of the three to finish. Cap was disqualified for gripping and Tia retired.

Run in packets of five the ewes could be very stubborn, both facing the dogs and splitting up.  Nevertheless they met their match with Zac, who had good outfield work but was unable to pen.  A rough coated dog, he was bred in April 2000 by Mrs P. Thomas out of Jan and sired by Hamer Jones’ Moss.
