27th August 2003 Sheep Dog Results. Joseph Relph’s Liz took her first open title at the mid-week Littledale trial, where her half sister, Bob Clarkson’s Sally was the runner up. John Palmer of Twiston, judged the entry of 81 dogs as they worked Mule and Texel-cross ewes over a long narrow pasture. Throughout the morning the sheep ran well, but became more unsettled during the afternoon. Running early at number 11 Liz had a good trial dropping a single point from her outrun and 11 for deviations of line over the course. Finishing with a clean pen and single she took the title by one mark over Sally, who gained 87 with run number 31. Both bitches were bred by Bob out of Gail, which is line bred back to John Thomas’ Craig. They also have very similar breeding on the other side for whereas eight-year-old Sally was sired by Paul Turnbull’s Nap, four-year-old Liz’s sire is Robin Dean’s Roy, a son of Nap. Liz is running very well at present. She has taken various local awards and all within a week was the runner up at Barbon, was fifth at Threlkeld and earned her first win at Littledale. George Smithson of Kirkbride, judged the 34 dogs in the open class along with the four brace entries. Running was on flighty Swaledale shearlings and two-shears over a dish shaped valley bottom course. Gathered either way, the sheep were not easy to settle and most packets proved tricky to pen. With run number 13, Chris
and Rob gained a score of 76 points. Although this score was matched by
David Carlton and Hemp at number 31, they took the title on an out-bye
decision. Chris took a clear lead in the brace class, running Rob and Gemma. Six-year-old Gemma is a daughter of Rob out of her master’s Gyp. The novice class of 28 entries was judged by Eddie Wills of Wythop. On this course where the running was on mixed packets of sheep the victors were Peter Ellis and Cap who also went on to win the novice trial held at Barbon on Saturday. A good standard of competitive work was seen at the English National Sheep Dog Trials, held on The Bolton Abbey Estate, near Skipton, North Yorkshire, last Thursday, Friday and Saturday. All of the one hundred and fifty entries were hoping to be amongst the top fifteen that make up the team which will represent England at the International, to be held near Stranraer, Scotland, in September. Despite the hot weather the sheep ran consistently well giving each competitor an equal chance of success. Possibly the fit Mule ewes worked on Thursday were slightly more free moving than the strong Mule shearlings which were run over Friday and Saturday. Although mainly flat to start the course rose up gently beyond the fetch gates, which made the sheep good to see. Timothy Longton of Quernmore and John Bee of Grimsthrope were the two singles judges. From the running on Thursday four dogs qualified, five from Friday and six from the final day. Derek Scrimgeour of Lonscale in Cumbria was the only competitor to qualify with two dogs. Aged twenty-two, Richard Hutchinson, formerly of Littledale, Lancashire, but who has recently gone to work as a shepherd at Chatsworth House, is the youngest team member getting through with his bitch Peg. Of the fourteen lady competitors, two made the team, Shirley Cropper of Deerplay running in her second national with Beechwood Bob and Jenny Holdsworth of Devon with her homebred Beth. It was a late run at number 148 on Saturday afternoon that took a clear undisputed victory, Derek Lloyd, a sheep farmer from Herefordshire, with L’Minster Moss. From a possible 220 points with their outstanding trial they lost just eight marks to take the title with a clear ten point lead over the runners up Frank Satterthwaite and Peggy, which at eleven-and-a-half-years-old was the oldest bitch to compete in the national. Moss is just turned four-years-old and is homebred out of L’Minster Jess by his master’s Ben. “He showed great promise from being very young and trained up quickly,” said Derek, who has been competing for over forty years. This is the second time Derek will captain the English team as in 1983 he was the winner with Jim, the great, great grand-sire of Moss. Winner of the brace competition was Gordon Watt of Silsden with Buff and York. Although he has represented Ireland on numerous occasions at the International, having moved to Yorkshire last summer this is the first time he will run for England. 5th August 2003 Sheep Dog Results. Veteran handler Tommy Brownrigg, won the Lowgill open trial held last Saturday at High Park House, Wray, North Lancashire, with smooth coated Ben. Running in his first trial aged fifteen, Tommy, who will be eighty-two in October, has many years of trialing experience behind him, despite having taken some time out as a young man due to work commitments. His expert handling along with Ben’s quick responses secured them a clear three-point lead over a field of 76 dogs judged by Harry Shacklady of Penwortham. Although the black and tan dog has been placed on countless occasions this was his first victory. Eight-years-old he was bred by his master out of Queen, a granddaughter of Nap, with which Tommy won the English National in 1991. Although he has been a regular competitor at the National, this year Tommy has decided not to enter. He feels that if he did qualify, the last day at the International might be a little too much for him at his age. RESULTS: LOWGILL, Park House, Open (76 ran): 1, T. Brownrigg (Newbiggin on Lune) Ben, 87 of 90; 2, L. Cowper (Threlkeld) Kate, 84; 3, F. Satterthwaite (Brough) Peggy, 83; 4, P. Ellis (New Hutton) Jack, 82; 5, A. Kyme (Lumb) Bill, 81; 6, J.
