28th August 2002 Sheep Dog Results. After qualifying with the first run on Friday morning at the national, the following Tuesday, Alan Leak and Bess won the open class at Hornby, North Lancashire. Joe Woodhouse of Abbeystead, judged the entry of 83 dogs. Over the flat course the running was generally better in the morning as the Swaledale ewes became slightly stubborn to lift during the afternoon. Running in the late forties, there were few errors in Bess’ trial. Between a clean start and finish she lost three marks for deviations over her driving. Her score of 87 of 90 points gave her the title by a single mark. Five-and-a-half-year-old Bess was bred by Alan out of Nell, a granddaughter of his Tweed. Her sire is her master’s Tad, a son of Ian Murdoch’s Ted. After being the runners up
at Hornby, on Thursday Timothy Longton and Vic were the winners at
Glassonby. Adam Fox of
Penton, judged the 62 entries as they worked Swaledale ewes that were
reasonable around the course but difficult at the pen.
On the same marks as Arthur Temple and Lassie 2, Timothy and Vic
took the title on a time decision.
Rough-coated Vic was bred by Timothy’s late father, Tim Longton
out of Becca and sired by his master’s Cap. RESULTS: LITTLEDALE, Open: 1, J. Palmer (Twiston) Jill, 88 of 100; 2, A. Kyme (Lumb) Bill, 86; 3, A. Leak (Gaisgill) Bill, 85; 4, D. conditions to be consistent at the English National held last Thursday,
Friday and Saturday, at Merton near Bicester.
Throughout the weather was very hot and the strong Mule ewes
proved a good test. Uncomfortable
in the heat the sheep were not easily handled, hence the more capable
dogs with working experience came to the top.
When challenged by the ewes a good number of dogs gripped which
resulted in their disqualification. Glen was bred by Mrs I Griffiths of Waunfawr, Caernarfon, out of Dot, a granddaughter of John Templeton’s Roy on her sire’s side and Spot on her dam’s side. A tri-coloured, leggy dog, he was sired by I. Jones’ Bill, a grand-son of W.D. Jones’ Mac on the side of his sire and John Lightfoot’s Black on the side of his dam. A beef and sheep farmer from Clun in Shropshire, this will be the fourth time Vic has qualified to be in the English team and the second time he will be the captain after winning in 1994 with Mac. Of the 15 qualifying competitors, five came from Thursday’s running, nine from Friday and just one from Saturday. Apart from Richard Hutchinson, who qualified in his very first national, all the others have represented England before. RESULTS: ENGLISH NATIONAL: 1, V. Lesley Penswick’s three-and-a-half-year-old Mirk took his first open title last Saturday at the Lowgill open trial. Arthur Temple of Holmrook judged the 75 entries. The mixed Swaledale and Dalesbred ewes ran well over the rising course, but were very touchy at the pen. Lesley and Mirk finished clean to gain 79 points. Sue Horn and Zac gained the same score with a later run, but took longer to complete their course, therefore as the decision was made on time they took second place. Smooth coated Mirk was homebred out of Chris and sired by Athol Clark’s Nip. David Carlton of Goosnargh judged the 54 entries at the Fylde open held at Brindle, where after the outfield work there was a shed, pen and single. By one mark Alf Kyme’s Bill took the title over Raymond MacPherson’s Bill in second place. After judging on Saturday David Carlton enjoyed victory on Sunday when he topped the entry of 77 at the Trawden open held at Twiston, which was judged by Fred Ingham of Arnside.
