29th April 2003 Sheep Dog Results. Following a very successful nursery season, last Saturday Alec Baines and Jess took the Yorkshire Novice title. Due to the continuing movement restrictions on livestock, instead of being held at the usual venue of Gargrave, North Yorkshire, this year the trial took place at Trawden, in Lancashire. The sizeable course certainly proved a challenge to competitors. With a fetch measuring 440 yards, after the first 100 yards the gather was crossed by a partly broken down wall, which drew many dogs in. Some failed to gather, while others managed but only after receiving numerous commands. Only five had clean outruns. Once the dogs had reached their sheep, the Mule hoggs were consistently good over the course but tricky to pen. Running at number 30, Alec Baines and Jess earned the winning score of 72 points. Smooth coated Jess had both a clean gather and faultless finish. For deviations over her fetch she lost four marks, then 14 went from her driving where she slipped her sheep at the last obstacle. A very sharp, alert bitch that responds instantly to commands she worked well throughout her trial. Three-years-old last February, I bred her out of Jen, a grand-daughter of Mark Hallam’s Highgate Ben and great grand-daughter of Allan Heaton’s Flash. Jess’ sire is Robin Dean’s Roy, a son of Paul Turnbull’s 1993 English National Champion, Nap. Alec has reared and trained her and over the winter they earned five nursery wins along with the Northern Championship title. Exactly the same as her dam, Jess was the top Yorkshire Society nursery dog of the season and also like Jen she has now gone on to win the prestigious Yorkshire Novice. At the Holme Easter Monday open trial, held over the lower slopes of Deerplay Hill, Lancashire, fog delayed the running for almost three hours. Starting at 7.30am, Peter Fox of Withgill, judged just 15 dogs before poor visibility brought a halt to proceedings. While most sat and waited, several competitors decided to go home. However, just after lunchtime the mist cleared and the running continued. Over the sizeable rising course, the Cheviot hoggs were flighty and difficult to pen. Most of the better runs came later in the day. At number 58 Wayne Allen and Astra Jasper earned the top score of 80 to take by title by one point over Frank Satterthwaite and Jess, who had been standing top on 79 with run number 40. Jasper had a good start and had tight turns at both drive obstacles. He lost some points over his cross-drive for being a little low and worked well at the pen, stopping the sheep from breaking until they finally went in. Three-year-old Jasper was bred by Janet Beale of Forfar out of Mishka and sired by Stuart Davidson Whiterose Kep. Reared and trained by Jim Cropper, Wayne bought him in September 2001. RESULTS: HOLME, Deerplay, Open (64 ran): 1, W. Allen (Sheen) Astra Jasper, 80 of 90; 2, F. Satterthwaite (Brough) Jess, 79; 3, A. Gilchrist (Llangollen) Pat, 78; 4, C. Dewhirst (Bank Newton) Solo, 77, TIME; 5, R. Hodgkinson (Chinley) Jess, 77; 6, T. Lawrenson (Brindle) Clifton Moll, 76. £170 raised for the English National. |

16th April 2003 Sheep Dog Results. With the first run of the day, Derek Scrimgeour won the mid-week Lonscale open trial with Jim. The Swaledale cross Scottish Blackface hoggs behaved reasonably well over the challenging course set on difficult terrain. However, they were very difficult at the pen and very few competitors completed their run. Amidst spectacular scenery and in beautiful sunny weather, Mark Pickering of Greystoke judged the entry of 61 dogs. Steady outfield work followed by a good pen earned Jim 80 points and his first open title. Bought six months ago from Andy Carnegie, the stylish dog was bred in Ireland by Andrew Wallace out of Ban and sired by Tom Long’s Glenn. He will be four years old in May. On Sunday at the Withgill open trial, Albert Mellin of Oakworth, judged 80 entries. Over a big, flat course the running was on Mule hoggs, which if handled carefully were reasonable over the outfield, but once again were hard to captured. An outstanding trial by Vincent Fox and Glen, who lost just four points throughout for minor line deviations, won the day. Just turned four-years-old, Glen was bred by George Smithson of Kirkbride out of Jess and sired by Timothy Longton’s Rob. RESULTS: LONSCALE FARM, Keswick,

Lawrenson (Brindle) Nell. £756.65 raised for Rosemere Cancer Foundation, at Preston. 7th April 2003 Jim Cropper enjoyed a double victory last weekend, winning on Saturday with Mac and on Sunday with Sid. Two trials were held at Deerplay on Saturday over the lower slopes of the hill. Running was on flighty Cheviot hoggs which were very difficult to pen. John Atkinson of Lumby judged the entry of 42 competing in morning trial. On an out-bye decision the title went to Jim and Mac, while Thomas Longton and Lad took second place on the same points. After very good outfield work, considering the awkward behaviour of the hoggs, Mac was unable to pen. Lad did secure his sheep, losing three points in the process, but lost marks for line deviations and wide turns over the course. Gordon Watt of Sisden judged the afternoon trial of 29 entries. Clarence Storey and Sweep missed an obstacle, but penned to take first place over Pat Noble and Bob who slipped their sheep at the first drive obstacle and also failed to pen. On Sunday Richard Clipsham of Gainsborough judged an entry of 61 at the Lindley Moor open trial. Over a sizeable hillside course the running was on reasonable to manage Texel-cross store lambs. After good outfield work and a good pen, some points were lost at the single, yet a score of 88 gave Jim and Sid a clear four point lead over the runners up, John Wood and Lad.
