29th April 2002 Sheep Dog Results. Les Jones and Bliss gained a worthy win last Sunday when they topped a large entry of 91 dogs at the Lindley Moor open trial. Richard Clipsham of Gainsborough judged the running which was over an extensive rising course. Despite the difficult weather conditions, which included strong winds and heavy showers of both rain and hail, Bliss kept quiet but firm control of her hoggs. She used her own initiative at the lift where she was unable to hear her master’s commands. Bliss took the title by one point over Frank Satterthwaite’s Jess in second place. Bliss was bred in December 95 by Ed Simpson of Gillamoor out of Jan and by Ben. Although she was originally sold as a pet and had never seen sheep when she went to Les in July 97, she was very keen to work. She has a superb temperament and is good to handle. Frank Satterthwaite and Peggy had a near perfect run on Saturday at the open trial organised by Malcolm Mason at Hutton, in the East Riding of Yorkshire. Mary Heaton of Brandsby
judged 61 entries and saw some very good running.
The Mule gimmer hoggs worked well over the course that was very
slightly dome shaped. Taking
the first run after the sheep had gone back, Frank and Peggy could only
be faulted over their driving. RESULTS: LOW GREEN FARM Open, Hutton, Driffield: 1, F. Satterthwaite (Brough) Peggy, 97 of 100; 2, J. Atkinson (South Milford) Bob, 95; 3, M. Stephen Hepworth has enjoyed an exceptional weekend of trialing, for after winning at Wennington, on Saturday with Carrie, he took the title at Deerplay, on Sunday with Nan. Carrie topped an entry of 66 dogs judged by Tom Huddleston of Caton. Flighty mixed hoggs were not easily handled over the rising course. With the third from last run she took the lead by one point from John Lightfoot who had been standing top with Bill. Bred in August 95 by Sharon Bolland of Bolton Abbey, Carrie was sired by Alf Kyme’s Moss. She now has approaching twenty open titles to her credit. On Sunday it was Nan that shone, a daughter of Carrie. Harry Shacklady of Penwortham, judged 87 dogs as they worked difficult North Country Cheviot hoggs over rough terrain. Nan had an outstanding trial, which was hard to fault. Losing just three marks overall, she took her first open title, five points clear of Vincent Fox and Glen in second place. Bred out of Carrie, Nan’s sire is Jim Cropper’s Clifton Coon, which is now in America. RESULTS: WENNINGTON Open: 1, S. Hepworth (Denholme) Carrie, 74 of 90; 2, J. There is certainly no stopping Alastair Gilchrist at present, for after winning both of the Bodfari open trials held on Good Friday and Easter Saturday with Mac, he went on to win the Holme Easter Monday open with Rhaiadr Roy. Held on the lower slopes of Deerplay Hill, the Holme trial attracted 87 entries, which were judged by Raymond Wild of Littleborough. The following Sunday, once again with Roy, Alastair topped an entry of 84 at the Lindley Moor open, judged by Ronnie Scargill, of Dewsbury. He says that he is enjoying the success while it lasts. Mac was bred in June 99 by
Kenny Donald of Dalry, Ayr, out of Tess and by Joe.
Rhaiadr Roy is just two-years-old this month, bred by E.
Humphreys of St. Asaph, out of Rhaiadr Jess and sired by Alastair’s
old dog Roy, a son of W.G. Jones’ Mac. Derek Scrimgeour was also
on good form last Sunday when he was placed both first and second at the
testing double gather trial held at Winster, where Stephen Thexton of
Sedbergh, judged the entry of 27 dogs.
Both of Derek’s dogs are Irish bred, with Ben taking the title
and Lyn being the runner up. Bred
in June 95, Ben is out of Michael Corry’s Bess, which goes back to
David Carlton’s Tony and is sired by D. Cahill’s Tass, a son of Tim
Flood’s Pip. Born in May

On his first outing away from home Tony Birkett’s Jaff took his first win at the nursery trial held at Swarthdale Farm. Richard Hutchinson of Littledale, judged the entry of 23 dogs, as they worked flighty Mule gimmer hoggs in packets of five over an undulating course. At just sixteen-months-old, Jaff is homebred out of his master’s bitch Lady and sired by Peter Capstick’s Cap At the Northern committee and team members nursery trial John Calvert of Askerton judged an entry of 33, from which the top ten went forward into a championship.
